Chapter Seven
By the time Colton was on the dirt road to home, the wind was howling. The trees planted around the ranch house bowed away from the gusts, and the clouds rolled in.
The cow herd was lowing, moving as one mass as the sprinkles of rain turned heavier. The horses were at the opposite end of the pasture, pressed against the wind break, their butts to the storm.
He parked his truck behind the barn. The clouds made the evening sky appear even darker, blocking all the stars and the moon. He pulled the jacket over his head and ran inside.
A fire in the hearth greeted him as he shook the droplets off his jacket and dried his boots on the mat.
âThanks for getting a fire started,â he said to Ty, who relaxed in a wood rocking chair, feet up by the fire. He could hear Jace in the office, talking to himself as he went through stacks of drawings. âWeâll need to keep an eye on the cows. They look like theyâre ready to take off.â
âDid you apologize to Gus?â Ty asked.
Jace stepped out of the office, a pencil in his hand. âDid things work out with Gus?â Jace asked curtly.
âI think so,â he replied. âSheâs still upset, but she understood.â
She was still upset at him. Would she have been this upset if they hadnât kissed today?
He ran his hand through his hair as he went to stand by the fire. His jeans were damp from the rain.
The trouble was, now that he had a taste of her again, he wanted more and didnât know how to get it. Gus was trying to put distance between them, and he didnât know how to stop that.
Except to go to Stephâs party. Which was a ridiculous request to fix a relationship.
What did a party have to do with them?
He paced the living room, walking past the hall that led to his fatherâs bedroom. The door had remained closed since they arrived. No one went in there. Not even Gus. Yet.
They would need her to check the structure and paint in there as well.
âHave you gone in there since Dad passed?â he asked Ty.
Ty shook his head. âNo. Weâll need to clean it out eventually.â
Colton looked at Jace, who also shook his head.
He stared at the door, hands on his hips. It was his dad who kicked him out, made him feel unworthy, that he was never going to be good enough.
It was his dad that made him decide to run out of this state and never return. Heâd ruined a relationship with a woman he cared about. He felt like a stranger in his own hometown. And now he had a legacy he didnât want or feel worthy of. Every day his dad made him feel worthlessâthe same dad whoâd run the Rocking H into the ground.
The old anger, always on simmer, flared hotter.
Gusâs wordsâthat he was just hiding out on the ranch, avoiding everyone and everythingâhit him squarely in the chest.
He wasnât avoiding anything.
